Darfur/Genocide. China, under international pressure to help end conflict in Darfur, made a rare call on its Sudanese ally on Sunday to do more to allow foreign peacekeepers to deploy to the region. Link

Kosovo/USA. Barack Obama issued statement in which he says that Kosovo’s independence is a unique situation resulting from the irreparable rupture Slobodan Milosevic’s actions caused; it is in no way a precedent for anyone else in the region or around the world. Link

NATO. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates made a direct appeal to Europeans to support the war in Afghanistan, warning that violence and terrorism could surge worldwide if NATO was defeated over there and that the credibility of the Alliance itself is at stake. Link

Genocide. The European Courier attended an event promoting “The Camp” - a book about the massacre in Srebrenica (Bosnia and Herzegovina), which is a compilation of testimonies of the victims, who survived the killings. The event focused on commemorating the past and the progress of reconciliation process in the region. Read more

NATO. Gen. John Shalikashvili (U.S.), Gen. Klaus Naumann (Germany), Gen. Henk van den Breemen (Netherlands), Adm. Jacques Lanxade (France) and Lord Inge (UK) said that in post-9/11 world, the West must be ready to resort to a pre-emptive nuclear attack to try to halt the "imminent" spread of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. Germany/Iran. Germany said on Wednesday it wanted a new U.N. resolution increasing sanctions against Iran over its disputed nuclear work, and major powers plan to meet in Berlin next Tuesday to discuss strategy. Link

China/North Korea. According to the report published by U.S. Institute of Peace, China has contingency plans to dispatch troops into North Korea and secure nuclear weapons in the event of instability in the hardline communist state. Link

Kenya/Democracy. Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki met U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer on Saturday and said he was ready to form a government of national unity to end the turmoil that followed the country's disputed election. Link
